Wild Finish Earns Fayetteville State One-Point Win Over WSSU
January 28, 2003
Fayetteville, NC - In a game where neither team led by more than
nine points, a wild finish would give the Fayetteville State University
Broncos an important 65-64 CIAA Western Division win over the
Winston-Salem State University Rams on Tuesday evening at Capel
Arena.
The Rams would lead for most of the way, and would take a 36-31
lead into the halftime break, but could never gain the upper hand
on the Broncos, and it would come back to haunt them. The two
teams would play a very tight game throughout as they would prove
to be very evenly matched. The Rams would connect on 11 of their
25 first-half shots (44.0%) while the Broncos would do only percentage
points worse as they would hit 14 of their 32 shots (43.8%).
The second half was much of the same, as the two teams would
stay close to one-another throughout most of the remainder of
the contest. WSSU would keep a four-point lead for the greater
part of the second half, despite only shooting 32% from the field
(8 for 25). The two teams were similar to two heavyweight fighters
trading blows as neither team could gain the definitive upper
hand.
Then the game would prove to start to get exponentially more
interesting. With only 4:19 left in the second half the Broncos
would tie the game at 63-63, when Bryan Chapman hit a sixteen-foot
jumper. The two teams would continue to trade baskets, and when
the Broncos hit a clutch jump shot with just over 30 seconds remaining,
the Rams would hold the ball for the final shot of the game.
The Rams would call a time out with 14.5 seconds remaining in
order to diagram a play for the game's final shot. After a dribble
penetration, the Rams' Juston White caught the ball at the left
junction and was fouled by the Broncos' Kenny Haywood. After the
foul, a scuffle ensued and according to officials, Haywood threw
a punch at White. Both players were assessed technical fouls and
both players were ejected.
After Vincent Sessoms hit the second of two free throw attempts,
the Rams would hold a slim one-point margin with 3.7 seconds left
in the game, with the Broncos needing a perfect shot to win the
game. With just under a second remaining the Broncos initial shot
hit the rim and Curtis Taylor snuck inside the defense and tipped
the ball in as the horn sounded to give Fayetteville State the
65-64 victory.
After the crowd rushed the court, and the dust settled, the Rams
would fall to 11-10 (6-4 CIAA) overall.
Leading the way for the Rams was Jay Maynard who recorded 14
points and four rebounds. Freshman Aleggrie Guinn and junior John
Adams each had eleven points for the Rams in the loss. The Broncos
were led by Bryan Chapman who tallied 21 points on 8 for 16 shooting
while adding five of six free throws in the win. Before being
ejected, Kenny Haywood chipped in with 17 points.
The Rams will be in action again on Saturday. February 1st against
the Eagles of North Carolina Central University in another important
CIAA game. The contest between the Rams and the Eagles will take
place at McClendon-McDougal Gymnasium in Durham, NC. The game,
which is slated for a 7:30 pm start, will be broadcast by Urban
Sports and Entertainment Co.
