#19 Bulldogs Corral Broncos
January 9, 2003
BOWIE, MD---The Bowie State University Bulldogs
jumped out to a quick 15- point lead and never looked back, reigning
in the Broncos of Fayetteville State University, 81-71.
The win was the eighth-consecutive for the Bulldogs (12-1 overall,
6-0 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) and sets the
stage for the Saturday night showdown with division rival Shaw
University, who enters with a 10-2 record and ranked 20th in Division
II.
The Bulldogs missed two three-pointers on their first possession
of the game, then proceeded to bang home their next five, building
a 19-4 lead.
After having a sub-par game against North Carolina Central University
on Tuesday, Omarr Smith came back strong with a team high 21 points
helped by his 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc.
An 11-4 run midway through the first half would build the lead
to 36-14 for the Bulldog. The scrappy Broncos (4-8, 0-3) would
show their mettle with a 16-2 run of their own to cut the deficit
to 40-32 with just under two minutes left in the half and go into
the break down by 10.
While the Bulldogs would build their lead to 22, the Broncos
kept scrapping never letting the game turn into a total blowout
by outworking the Bulldogs on the boards by a 46-36 margin, getting
a number of their points on second chance opportunities. They
would never seriously threaten the Bulldogs, though.
The Bulldogs talented five were too much for the Broncos. Tim
Washington scored 15 points, Stephen Moss-Kelley had 13 points
and Jon Smith had 10 points and three blocked shots. Cornelius
McMurray picked his sports to score, finishing with 13, but kept
the ball moving to the right people and had 10 assists to his
credit.
Bryan Chapman was the main force for the Broncos with 22 points
and 10 rebounds. Kenny Haywood and Darrelle Robinson would each
finish with 10 points.
