Second Free Throws Give Hampton 61-60 Victory Over Richmond
Spiders
November 27, 2002
Hampton, VA – MEAC Rookie of the Year Devin Green struggled
for most of the night going 3-of-15 from the field but stepped
up when it counted, knocking down two free throws with 1.1 seconds
remaining to lift the Hampton University Pirates to a 61-60
win over the Richmond Spiders in the first ever meeting between
the two schools.
Behind the outside shooting of seniors Barry Hairston and Mackel
Purvis who combined for 36 points, going 6-of-13 from behind
the arc, the Pirates (2-0) built their lead to as many as five
(41-36) points with 15:57 to play in the ball game. Yet the
Spiders continued to keep the game close with the scoring of
Tony Dobbins and Mike Skrocki. Dobbins poured in a game high
19 points and Skrocki hit what appeared to be the game winning
shot as he drove through the lane connecting on a 15-foot jumper
with 10 seconds to play to put the Spiders ahead 60-59. However,
on the ensuing possession Green drove to the lane and was fouled
by Richmond’s Jamaal Scott with 1.1 seconds on the clock.
Green calmly toed the line and connected on both free throws
to seal the win for Hampton.
Hampton returns to the court next Wednesday, December 4 when
they take on another in-state rival in the Monarchs of Old Dominion
University at 7:00 p.m.
