Rams' Win Streak Halted At Two Games; Fall To NC Central 91-68

February 18, 2003

Winston-Salem, NC - At least the Rams have one more chance to redeem themselves before traveling to Raleigh, NC to compete in the 2003 CIAA Men's Basketball Tournament next weekend, because Tuesday evening at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum was not kind to WSSU, and neither were the Eagles of North Carolina Central University.

The Rams would fall behind early 7-0 and would never lead in the contest, and the only time that the score would be tied on the evening was at the opening tip when the game was scoreless. Trailing 7-0, it looked like the Rams were going to come back once again after Jay Maynard hit back-to-back three-point field goals to cut the Eagles lead to one at 7-6, however NCCU promptly went on a 10-0 run, eventually leading 17-6 with 15:43 to play. That was as close as the Rams would get for the remainder of the evening.

WSSU would commit nearly twice as many turnovers as their opponent on the evening as they tallied 17 turnovers (a full four turnovers more than the season average per game) and NCCU would tally only nine. However the story was not the turnovers, but the points off of turnovers, as the Eagles were able to turn those 17 turnovers into 27 points.

The games eventual outcome was never in doubt to the abundance of Ram fans in attendance, as the Eagles would carry a robust 17-point lead into halftime, leading 45-28. The Rams fell victim to a quality Eagle team, who shot very well from the floor in the first half (58.1% on 18-31 shooting) and they fell victim to themselves as well, blowing opportunities and throwing easy points away.

The second half would get no better for the Rams as they failed to mount any real comeback. The usually staunch Ram defense was lackadaisical, and the Eagles took advantage of WSSU defensive lapses to bury the Rams.

NCCU was led by six players in double figures in scoring, as Shawn Ray led all scorers with 21 points on the evening. However, it was not the Shawn Ray show, as he was joined by teammates who chipped in 16, 14, and 11 points respectively, as well as two Eagles who tallied 10 points each on the evening.

The Rams were led by freshman Darnell Gregory with 15 points and Jay Maynard and Robert Lee with 13 and 12 points respectively. However, it was not enough to keep the Rams from falling to 13-13 overall and 8-7 in the CIAA. The Eagles improve to 14-11 overall and 9-5 in the CIAA and remain in first place in the CIAA Western Division at 8-1 on the season.

The bright spot on the evening is that the Rams will close out the regular season at home, in the CE Gaines Center on Thursday evening as they welcome the CIAA's hottest team, the Virginia Union Panthers to Winston-Salem, NC as they look to head into the CIAA Tournament riding a win. Game time is slated for 7:30pm with tickets still available.
