UMES Hawks Fall to Bethune-Cookman in Low Scoring Affair

February 17, 2003

PRINCESS ANNE, MD--The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Fighting Hawks (3-20, 3-11 MEAC) were hoping to add another win to their total tonight against a team they got their first of the season against. It wasn’t to be as UMES fell to the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman College (BCC) (6-16, 5-8 MEAC) by a 57-48 margin.

UMES played excellent defense holding BCC to just 47 shots and 57 total points. Even though they shot almost 47 percent UMES kept the game close and could not seem to score when it counted. The Hawks got solid games from Tee Trotter who led all scorers with 16 points and Ali Trotman who led all rebounders with nine. Aaron Wellington added 12 points but UMES could not overcome four Wildcats in double figures with Pape Ba leading the way with 14, Michael Williams getting 13, Richard Toussaint netting 11 and Maurice Riddick knocking in ten. Toussaint led them in rebounding with nine. The Hawks even won the turnover battle committing only 11 and forcing 14. They were out rebounded 34-31 but won it on the offensive boards 12-7.

The Hawks had the game tied at two early after a rebound and put back by Trotman. They then got one of two from the line from Javes Wiggins and took a 3-2 lead. Toussaint got the lead back for BCC but UMES got a three-pointer from Trotter to give it right back and the Hawks led 6-4. After a Ba bucket UMES got another from Wiggins to make it UMES eight, Bethune-Cookman six. Williams would make one of two from the line to cut the UMES lead to one at the 16:32 mark and it would be the last time UMES would lead in the game. The Wildcats would extend their lead to as many as 13 but the Hawks kept battling. With just over a minute to play in the half Wellington would get a lay-in and a pair of free throws to cut the margin to 36-27 at half time in favor of the Wildcats.

In the second-half the Hawks would get it to six points just two minutes in but let BCC run it back to eight just five minutes later. The Hawks would get a three-pointer from Wellington to cut the lead to five and the Hawks were threatening. The Wildcats tightened the laces and had a 12-point lead four minutes later. With five minutes to play the Hawks would have the lead at four after a thundering dunk and a jumper from Ka’Reem Horton. UMES buckled down on defense and forced several BCC turnovers but could not capitalize on them. Ba made a lay-in with 4:09 to play and Wellington would follow for UEMS with one of two from the line at the 1:53 mark. The wildcat lead was five. Horton would go to the goal again and draw contact but missed two free throws and BCC would get the rebound. Toussaint would calmly knock in two free throws with 18 seconds to play to push the lead to seven. Riddick would hot another pair and the lead was nine and it would stay that way with UMES falling 48-57 to the Wildcats.

“I thought this was a winnable game tonight,” said Head Coach Thomas Trotter. “We had them down, turning over the ball and set to win but could not capitalize. We have to keep our heads up and finish the season strong,” he added.

UMES takes on North Carolina A & T State on Saturday in Greensboro, NC at 7:30 pm.
