Cavalieri,
Dockery Lead St. Francis to Win Over Howard
December 7, 2002
Washington, DC, Dec. 7--Tory Cavalieri and Bronski Dockery each
scored 20 points to lead five players in double figures as Saint
Francis of New York easily defeated Howard University, 88-67 in
a non-conference men's basketball game at Burr Gymnasium.
Dockery, a 6-2 senior guard, got the Terriers (2-2) off to a quick
start by scoring 10 of his team's first 18 points as they bolted
out to an 18-4 lead and never trailed. Cavalieri, a 6-0 sophomore
guard contributed to the effort as he and Dockery combined to
hit on 5 of 7 from the three-point line.
The Bison (1-4) re-grouped briefly on the scoring of senior guard
Ron Williamson, who scored 11 points during a three-minute to
get his team to within 10 at 43-33 at the half.
But St. Francis used a balanced attack in the second half to hold
Howard at bay. Cliff Strong (14 points), Christian Brown (11 points)
and Chris Sockwell (12 points, 8 rebounds) distributed the ball,
recording 18 assists on 28 baskets.
The Bison closed to within seven twice, but each time Dockery
or Cavalieri rebuffed their comeback attempts with key baskets
or free throws.
Howard, which was coming off a West Coast swing that had them
playing two games in three days out there, appeared to suffer
from jet lag, shooting 38 percent (24 of 63) from the field and
turning the ball over a season-high 22 times. Only Williamson
was able to have a productive night as he finished with a season-high
32 points, including 6 of 12 from beyond the stripe.
Kyle Williams, Williamson's backcourt mate and team leading scorer
(18.8 points per game), scored season-low 10 points, only 3 points
in the second half before fouling out.
Williamson now needs 16 points to reach the 1,000 point mark in
his career.
Howard will play its fourth game in nine days when it takes on
American University on Monday at Bender Arena at 7 p.m.. St. Francis
plays at St. Johns on Wednesday.
