2003 Division II Men's Basketball Elite Eight:
Bowie State 72, UMass-Lowell 62

March 26, 2003

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Stephen Moss-Kelly scored 21 points and Tim Washington added 15 points aand 11 rebounds to lead South Atlantic Region champion Bowie State (30-4) to a 72-62 win over Northeast Region Champion Massachusetts-Lowell (28-5) in the first quarterfinal game at the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Elite Eight.

The first half was marked by eight lead changes, with neither team leading by more than five points. Massachusetts-Lowell controlled the tempo late in the half and opened a 30-25 lead at halftime, behind 13 points from Elad Inbar. Neither team shot the ball exceptionally well in the first 20 minutes. The River Hawks shot 38.2% (13-34) from the field in the first half, compared to the Bulldogs' 36.0% (9-25).

Moss-Kelley led all first-half scorers with 16 points, but would be held to just five in the second half. Washington added six points in the first half and Allen Van Norden added three, the only other Bowie State players to score in the opening half.

"I'm a senior captain," said Moss-Kelley, "so it's my job to do what the team needs. In the first half, I needed to step up and make shots. We were bigger than them, but they didn't back down."

Massachusetts-Lowell's five-point halftime lead would grow to seven in the opening two minutes of the second half, but Bowie State rallied to take a 43-41 lead with 9:20 to play. The Bulldogs would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game, outscoring the River Hawks 29-21 from that point forward.

"We made the plays down the stretch when we needed it," added Bowie State head coach Luke D'Alessio. "This team plays tough when it counts."

Bowie State outshot Massachusetts-Lowell 47.8% (11-23) to 38.9% (14-36) in the second half, and 41.7% (20-48) to 38.6% (27-70) for the game.

From the free-throw line, Bowie State enjoyed a distinct advantage, outscoring Massachusetts-Lowell 25-3, including a 22-2 advantage in the second half. The Bulldogs took 34 free throw attempts, compared to just four for the River Hawks.

Massachusetts-Lowell was led by Inbar, who scored a game-high 27 points, despite fouling out with 2:13 to play. Ty Brunson added 10 points for the River Hawks.

"I'm very proud of my guys," said Massahusetts-Lowell head coach Ken Barer. "We came in with a good game plan and it worked in the first half. In the second half, the shots didn't fall."

Bowie State's Cornelius McMurray added 11 points and a game-high eight assists.

The teams were essentially even on the boards, with Bowie State claiming a 39-38 rebounding advantage.

Bowie State, appearing in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in school history, advances to Thursday's semifinal round, where they will meet the winner of today's Kentucky Wesleyan-Cal Poly Pomona game at 6:00 p.m.
