Concordia Makes First-Ever
Trip to NAIA Semifinals with 64-52 Win Over Barber-Scotia

(KANSAS CITY, Mo.)—Concordia University (Calif.) became
the first team to advance to the semifinal round of the 2003
Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National
Championship with a 64-52 win Saturday against Barber-Scotia
College (N.C.) at Municipal Auditorium.
Senior guard Rashaun Thomas led a balanced scoring attack with
15 points to lead the Eagles to their first NAIA Fab Four berth.
Concordia, the No. 6 seed, is now 34-4 on the season and will
face either McKendree College (Ill.) or Olivet Nazarene University
(Ill.) in a tournament semifinal game Monday at 6 p.m. CST.
Concordia opened the game with a 14-4 run. The Eagles hit a
trio of three-pointers in that stretch, including two by junior
forward D. Jay Lucas. Barber-Scotia chipped away at the deficit,
pulling to within 21-18 on a basket by senior guard Nick Boyd
with 6:02 left in the period. However, Concordia regained control,
and closed the half with seven consecutive points to take a 37-22
lead into the locker room.
Barber-Scotia threatened early in the second half as it closed
the gap to 40-36 with just over 13 minutes to play. But that
was as close as the Sabers would come. Concordia used a streak
of nine unanswered points to command a 62-46 lead with 2:48 to
play.
For the game, Concordia hit 11-of-22 shots from three-point
range. They also limited Barber-Scotia to just 38.7 percent shooting
from the field.
Lucas came off the bench to add 14 points for Concordia. Sophomore
center Tanner Luster chipped in with 14 points and a team-high
eight rebounds. The 64 points scored by the Eagles represents
the lowest point total for Concordia this season.
For Barber-Scotia, junior forward Phillip Hillstock led the
way with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Boyd also posted
a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebuonds. The Sabers end
the season with a 27-9 record.
