Former CIAA Great To Be Inducted Into NYC Basketball Hall of FameSeptember 18, 2001Winston-Salem, NC - Former Winston-Salem State University basketball standout Jack Defares will be among eight individuals inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame on Thursday, September 20, 2001 at the New York City Athletic Club. After perfecting his game playing on various teams throughout New York City, Defares went on to star at Winston-Salem State University where he played under legendary coach, Clarence "Big House" Gaines. As a four-year letterman for WSSU, this outstanding guard was a three-time All-CIAA selection (1955-57) and two-time CIAA Player of the Year (1956 & 1957). In addition he led the Rams in scoring and assists his final three seasons. Since his college days, Defares has garnered many outstanding honors worthy of mention. He was named to the All-Time Great CIAA Tournament Team in 1970 and inducted into the Winston-Salem State University Hall of Fame in 1975. The Harlem native is also a member of the Don Boscos Hall of Fame, the Brooklyn USA Hall of Fame, the Daily News/Ruckers Professionals' Hall of Fame and the "Bob" Douglas Hall of Fame. Also a graduate of Rutgers University, Defares is currently a retired employee of the Newark Board of Education where he served as an administrator for thirty-five years and serves on the Board of Directors for Our Children's Foundation, Inc., NYC.
