After 26 years, McIver gets promotion at Morgan StateSeptember 27, 2001Joe McIver has been promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics for External Operations, after serving 26 years as the Sports Information Director. A veteran of the profession, Joe became MorganÕs first full-time S.I.D. one day after graduating from MSU on June 1, 1975. One of his first successful professional ventures was the selection of his former teammate Marvin Webster as the National Associated Press College Division Player of the Year in 1976. The following year McIver served as the Media Director for the first NCAA football game played outside of the Western Hemisphere, when Morgan State University played Grambling State University in Tokyo, Japan. It was the first of many over-seas ventures Joe McIver would serve during his career. He also served as the Media Director for the MEAC Summer Basketball Tour in Dakar, Senegal in 1976 and the Morgan State Christmas Basketball Tour to Brazil, Peru and Argentina, South America. During his 26-year stint at Morgan State, McIver has served as University Acting Public Relations Director from 1979-80 and Acting Director of Athletics (1982-83). His current title is the Assistant Athletics Director of Marketing and Media Relations. Last summer, he was elected President of the Black College Sports Information DirectorÕs Association in Orlando, Florida. He led the re-organization of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference SIDÕs Association and implemented the MEACSIDA Annual Summer Workshop, which was applauded by the NCAA as one of the best in country. He currently serves on the MEACÕs Hall of Fame and Basketball Tournament Committees and also serves as an NCAA Committee Representative for the First and Second Round games of the 2000 NCAA Division I WomenÕs Basketball Championship at the University of Virginia and the 2001 NCAA Tournament at the University of Connecticut. The 2001 College Sports Information Directors Association Workshop will marked his sixteenth overall workshop starting with the 1976 CoSIDA Workshop in Houston, Texas. He has been an active participant in the past six workshops and was honored with the 25-year award by CoSIDA at the St. Louis Convention in June of 2000. This past year Joe was named to the CoSIDA Board of Directors as an At-Large Division I selection at the San Diego, California workshop. While an undergrad, McIver played on Morgan StateÕs NCAA College Division National Basketball Championship team in 1974. The 49-year-old native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is married to the former Deborah Burgette from New Haven, Connecticut and they are the proud parents of three children, Jennifer (19), a sophomore at the University of Maryland-College Park, Joey (17) and Jarrett (12).
