Livingstone postpones game against Virginia Union

September 12, 2001

Salisbury N.C. - Livingstone College President Algeania Freeman announced at a general assembly Wednesday that in light of the national tragedy which occurred Tuesday, Livingstone College is postponing the football contest with Virginia Union University scheduled for Saturday, September 15. The game will be rescheduled at a later date.

Freeman, a former Pentagon fellow, said, "In honor of those who died, and in respect to the families and friends affected by the tragedy, officials at Livingstone collaborated with officials from Virginia Union University and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) in making the decision."

Conferences and individual schools have authority to determine whether to play regular season games. Given questions from the media and inquiries being received from our member schools and conferences, the NCAA is engaged in discussions with college presidents and conference commissioners to assist them in making decisions about conducting athletics contests, particularly college football games over the next several days. "The games themselves are insignificant in the face of what has happened," said Cedric Dempsey, NCAA president. "We urge schools to make sound decisions about proceeding with contests in the coming days."

After holding an all-day prayer session Tuesday on campus, Livingstone students continue to be supportive of those in need. Many students plan to donate blood through the American Red Cross and will be volunteering to help Red Cross workers. The campus will hold a Blood Drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross and a Bone Marrow Registry Thursday, September 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Old Trent Gym since the Red Cross will need to restock its supplies late in the month.

"One pint of blood can save three lives," Livingstone Nurse Pam Henley said, "We can all be heroes by donating just a pint."
