Bethune-Cookman decides not to play Savannah State Saturday

September 13, 2001

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – Bethune-Cookman College has reversed its decision and decided not to play Savannah State University Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

B-CC President Dr. Oswald P. Bronson, meeting with Athletic Director Lynn Thompson, announced late Thursday afternoon that the game will not take place based on tropical storm Gabrielle that’s expected to sweep across the Florida Saturday, and the nationwide call for prayer and unity as it relates to the terrorists attacks.

"We have taken another look at the situation in view of the tropical depression developing in the Gulf of Mexico, which is accompanied by lightning. This is a huge safety concern for our players, students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans," Dr. Bronson said. "In addition, we recognize the national call for prayer in remembrance of the victims, we also feel it is necessary to cancel the game for the weekend," Dr. Bronson said.

B-CC received a call from Lockhart Stadium Director Don Cifra in Fort Lauderdale, advising that weather and safety would be an issue if the game is played, and B-CC administrators agreed.

"The unpredictable nature of this storm and the likelihood that it will become a hurricane forced us to make this decision," Thompson said. "We certainly don’t want to put our students, fans and supporters in perilous conditions."

Thompson notified Savannah State because they would be forced to bus through these adverse weather conditions.

The game vs. Savannah State might be rescheduled, Thompson said. "We will meet with Savannah State administrators to determine if there is a suitable date for both teams," Thompson said. "Currently, neither team has a convenient open date on its schedule."
