Texas Southern Wide Receivers Cope with the Heat During Two-a-Day
Practices
8/17/01
TSU wide receivers are hard at work in the summer heat getting ready for
the season opener against Prairie View.
"We have a lot of young players who did not play much last year that are
looking good during these practices," Passing Game Coordinator Coach
Reginald Brown said. "I'm expecting quite a few of them to help
contribute to the team this season."
Junior Cortez Hankton is the prime target heading into the year. The New
Orleans native led the Tigers in 2000, averaging 82 yards per game.
"This should be Hankton's breakout year," Brown said." He was our leading
receiver last season and has shown tremendous improvement during camp."
The coaches are taking extra precautions because of the heat during camp.
All SWAC defensive lineman, Tommy Balom was held out of both practices
because of dehydration.
"It's always extremely hot during the summer in Houston," Brown said.
"It's our job as coaches to protect the players, but at the same time,
make sure they are putting their best foot forward. Coach Thomas does an
excellent job making sure the players receive the proper care during these
hot two-a-day practices."
