8/17/01
BATON ROUGE, LA - Head coach Pete Richardson and staff got a good up close
and personal look at their team when the Jags went out in full gear for the
first time in fall camp.
"We are starting to come around and showing sparks of just what we can do
this season," says Pete Richardson. "The younger guys are starting to pick
thing up on a mor consistent basis, and I can't tell you how pleased I've
been all year long since last season with the senior leadership our guys are
showing."
Topping the day, was kicker Francisco Villagrana, who practiced with the
team for the first time today, after arriving from Phoenix, Arizona after a
wild drive across the country.
Villagrana connected on several long field goals, including a 450-yarder as
Coach Richardson showed his pleasure with a huge smile.
"Having Francisco her really makes a difference with our special teams,"
added Richardson. "He can kick and punt and it makes things go smoother,
when your kicker is here."
The Jaguars used the second practice today to work specifically on
special teams, from both sides of the ball.
Other tidbits from today's practice include: Michael Hayes (WR) missed
today's practices and is doubtful for tomorrow's practices after having th
toenail on his big toe completely removed. Hayes had been suffering from an
ingrown toenail, but the doctors decided to remove the whole nail. He should
be back at practice for Saturday's scrimmage. humidity rose and causing temps
