Jags go through spirited workouts; Kicker finally shows
8/15/01
BATON ROUGE, LA - The Jaguars took advantage of a break in the weather and
got in two good practices today, after spending the afternoon practice
working inside of the "Mini-Dome".
"We are starting to come along," says nine year head coach, Pete Richardson.
"It got a little hot out here today, but that is something that we are going
to have to learn to play through."
Southern went through two sharp practices today, that ranged from individual
work to group work, that eventually led to a 20 minute team period that saw
the 1st team from the offensive side go against the 1st team defense.
The Southern Jaguars will put pads on for the first time in tomorrow
morning's first practice. That practice is scheduled for 8:00 AM and will
run to approximately 10:15 AM. They will go out in just shorts and shoulder
pads in the second practice.
Also, the Jaguars can breath a sigh of relief as second year kicker,
Francisco Villagrana finally reported to camp. Villagrana handled the
kickoff duties for SU last season, and will be called on to handle all
kicking duties this fall. Francisco, who drove to Baton Rouge from his home
in Phoenix, Arizona, had car troubles in Texas, and got caught in yesterday's
violent storms in Texas. He arrived on campus about 9:00 PM on Tuesday night.
