Preseason Football Report
SC State Practice Brief
8/22/01
Orangeburg, SC - South Carolina State held the last of two-a-day football drills Tuesday as classes are set to start on Wednesday. The Bulldogs will begin one daily workout on Wednesday at 8 p.m. SCSU will also practice at the same time Thursday and hold a 7 p.m. scrimmage on Friday. Times for future practices will be announced later, according to head coach Willie Jeffries.
During Tuesday's morning practice, SCSU concentrated on special teams, including field goals, PATs and kickoff returns. The Bulldogs also gave some attention to its pass offense and installed their two-minute drill during the drill.
In the afternoon segment, the offensive line, defensive line, linebackers and tight ends did a lot of sledge work, according to Jeffries. The Bulldogs also gave quite a bit of attention to perimeter and inside plays.
Jeffries reported that two players SCSU was counting heavily on this season will have to undergo surgery. Linebacker Darion Hutcherson, who led the team in tackles last year, will undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove torn cartilage from his left knee. And running back Coty Martin, who was injured in last Friday's scrimmage, will have to undergo surgery to repair a torn ACL. Hutcherson will miss 3-4 weeks, while Martin could be lost for the season.
Jeffries did have some good news, however, as he reported that projected starting linebacker Derek Harrison, who had been sidelined with a hamstring injury, has returned to practice and is going at full speed.
