Darnell Kennedy is a now show
for ASU Hornets’ first scrimmage
8/23/01
The Alabama State University Hornets held their first
scrimmage on Wednesday at Hornets Stadium, but without
starting quarter back Darnell Kennedy leading the
first team offense.
Kennedy, a 6-foot senior quarterback from Mobile,
Ala., is dealing with academic issues.
“A student athlete is no different from a regular
student. They have to finish their work and make them
accountable like a regular student. I do not know,
when Kennedy will return to the practice field. Right
now that is up Darnell Kennedy,” said coach second
year coach L.C. Cole.
Georgia Tech University transfer ran the first team
offense; where as Oklahoma State University transfer
B.J. Tiger ran the second team offense.
“We were a little sluggish today. Tiger and Crenshaw
did some nice thing for us today. I believe, it
always take a little time for our offense to generate
and get to going. We have a very high octane offense,
a very potent offense. I think, our offense will be
in full flow on Sept. 8,” said Cole.
The Hornets will host Alcorn State University on
Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Cramton Bowl. Kick off is
slated for 6:30 p.m.
The Hornets defense was a key standout during
Wednesday’s scrimmage, with 10 starters returning on
defense, the Hornets will be a force to be dealt
within the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Last
season the Hornets were ranked eight in the SWAC in
total defense giving up 395.4 yards per game.
“We are a veteran defensive unit, we got the same
guys back from last, of course we only lost one
players from last year,” said second year coach Cole.
In addition to the Hornets defensive performance,
Thomas Elmes, a 6-foot-2, freshman place kicker from
Mobile, Ala., who connected on two of three field
goals hitting from 27 and 35 yards out. He also went
a perfect three for three in the PAT department.
“He was the most exciting thing I seen today. He is
a young freshman kid stepping in the starting role.
He was two for three today and that was kinda of
fantastic for me today,” said Cole.
Alabama State University will hold a second fan
appreciation day on Wednesday, August, 29 at
Riverfront Park at 6 p.m. At the conclusion of fan
appreciation day, fans and alumni will have a chance
to meet the senior football players aboard the Betsy
Anne River Boat. Admission to board the Betsy Anne
will be $6. For more information, you can contact
the ASU football office at (334) 229-4444.
