Preseason Football Report
Alabama State Hornets show enthusiasm, but are very rusty

8/18/01

Montgomery, Ala., - The Alabama State University Hornet varsity football players practiced for the first time on Friday in helmets and shorts at Hornet Stadium. The Hornets worked on basic fundamentals in their individual work outs and continued the evening practice with offensive and defensive formation in group workouts. The team concluded the evening practice with seven on seven drills and conditioning workouts.

“I think everyone was very enthusiastic about the first day of practice. The kids were really flying around out here today. It was very humid and hot out here today and the kids fought through it. Right now, we are very rusty from the spring workouts. I hope, that we can pick it up on tomorrow afternoon,” said second year head football coach L.C. Cole.

“I think today went very good. We were sharp and snappy, you can tell that the guys workout this summer. I was very impressed with the new guys today. They practiced with a lot of enthusiasm. Darnell Kennedy was pretty sharp, along with our two other quarter backs B.J. Tiger and Jermaine Crenshaw.” said assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Johnnie Cole.

The Hornets will practice in full gear on Monday, Aug. 20, at 5:15 p.m., during the evening portion of practice. During the morning session of practice the Hornets will hit the weight room for conditioning workouts.

“If we can pick it up this weekend, I will be looking forward to Monday. But, if we continue to be sloppy the way it is right now. I am afraid to see what it will be like with the pads on,” said L.C. Cole.
