Alcorn State's receivers work on consistency
8/23/01
Alcorn State, Miss. The Alcorn State wide receiver corps will be both very big and talented in personnel. Even though this group will have a lot returning, consistency is a very huge concern with head coach Johnny Thomas throughout the course of training camp.
"We have a core group of receivers who have a lot of experience and are of pretty good size. We have got to get more consistent in catching the ball as a wide receiver corps," Thomas said. "They are going to have to make some plays for us and we are going to depend on them because we have a young quarterback."
Senior Marco Walder (6-6,230) and junior Ronald Gilmore (6-4,195) along with speedster Clifford Perry (6-2,175,Jr.) are expected to pose a serious threat to opponents during the season.
Junior George Jones (6-5,195) along with newcomers Coutney Young (5-10,154,Fr.) and Chris Gale (6-0,175,So.) should all provide some depth for this group in 2001.
"We are not where we want to be at for our wide receiver group because we are not consistently catching the ball, but I think that we can improve on that and get better," Thomas added. "Overall, we are a pretty good wide receiver corps and I think that the only thing lacking is consistency in catching the ball."
The team worked on goal line and skeleton passing drills along with some one-on-one and seven-on-seven drills. Thomas feels that everyone has been giving a good effort although there is some room for improvement.
"Practice is coming along pretty good, but not as good as I want it to be.
The guys are working hard, going all out and executing and doing the very best that they can do in the heat. It is going by as well as you can expect at this particular point."
Alcorn State will host its annual media day activities on Saturday, August 25th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. There will be a cookout hosted by the A-Club at the park on Alcorn State's campus.
