Alcorn's Holbert earns preseason All-America honors

ALCORN STATE, Miss. - Senior tight end Marcus Holbert was named to the 2001 Black Voices Quarterly magazine's preseason All-America team as a first team selection which was released in their summer 2001 edition. Last month, the 6-foot-4 inch, 240-pounder was a second team selection in Street and Smith's College Football magazine 2001 preseason Black College All-America team.

He has been a starter for the past three seasons while at Alcorn State.

During the 2000 season, Holbert posted a stellar performance in which he earned honorable mention Division I-AA All-America honors by Don Hansen's Weekly Football Gazette in addition to being a first team All-SWAC selection for the second straight year. He caught 15 passes for 182 yards including two touchdowns while being ranked third on the team in both receptions and receiving yards. The Morton, Mississippi native averaged 12.1 yards per catch in which he had a seven game streak in which he caught a pass during the season.

Holbert as a sophomore, caught 14 passes for 249 yards including three scores while averaging 17.8 yards per catch as during the 1999 season. He was also an All-SWAC selection while coming into the 2000 season as the number four ranked tight end prospect in the country (I-AA) according to The Sports Network news service.

In addition, Holbert was also named to two preseason Division I-AA All-America teams. He was a first-team selection by The Sporting News and a second team selection with Lindy's National College Football publication.

On Friday, the team worked on play execution in the morning session while in the afternoon participated in both seven-on-seven running and passing drills along with conducting a controlled scrimmage.
