Football to return to Shaw University in 2002

(Raleigh, NC) - Shaw University Board of TrusteesChairman, Willie E. Gary announced today that the University is in the finalstages of reinstating the sport of football. The University plans to havethe program in place for the 2002 Football Season. Mr. Gary says "theUniversity is excited about bringing football back to Raleigh and this willalso bring additional excitement to our campus."

Initially Shaw will participate as a Club Team before moving up to theDivision II level in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association(CIAA).

The Football Committee Chairman Joe Bell, who is also a member of the ShawUniversity Board of Trustees, remarked that "the search committee isfinalizing the candidates' list for the head coaching position and one isexpected to be named in the near future."

Founded in 1865, Shaw University's football program dates back to 1897(circa). The program was discontinued in 1942 & 1943 during the war years.With the end of the war and an increase in enrollment, the football programwas revived in 1946 and the University began a recruiting program, offeredscholarships and initiated more formalized training in football. During the1947 season, the football team finished with 10 wins, no losses, no ties,and won the CIAA Championship and the Black College National Championship.The program continued (with the exception of one year in 1952) through 1978season. In 1979 the program was once again discontinued.
