Savannah State Designates S.C. State as Joe Turner Classic Opponent

May 14, 2002

The Savannah State University athletics administration has chosen South Carolina State University as this year's opponent for the ninth annual Joseph Turner Classic. The game will be played September 21, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. in Savannah.

This year the classic returns to the tradition of being the first home football game of the season. The classic was first played in 1994 with Savannah State hosting Texas Southern.

The classic is held in honor of the legendary Joseph Turner who was an outstanding athlete (track, football, and basketball) at Savannah State from 1948 to 1952 and a dynamic high school teacher and coach in the Savannah Public School System from 1953 until he retired in 1980. As a high school coach, Turner was named coach of the year seven times and had a career record of 204-101-4. Turner returned to SSU in the 1980's as assistant football and head track coach.
