FAMU and Lincoln Maintain Leads in Minority College Golf ChampionshipMay 11, 2002PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Florida A&M University's Jason Owens posted an even-par 72 during a gusty Saturday afternoon at PGA Golf Club's North Course, keeping the Rattlers within striking distance of their second Division I title in the 16th National Minority College Golf Championship. Lincoln University's Brent Bayer left only the chase for medalist honors in doubt as the Blue Tigers from Jefferson City, Mo., all but wrapped up their third overall Division II crown. Owens, a sophomore from Hobe Sound, Fla., has a 36-hole total of 5-under-par 139, seven strokes ahead of Texas-Pan American sophomore Rudy Celedon of Edinburg, Texas, whose 77 left him at 146. The Championship, which concludes Sunday, features 21 colleges and universities with representatives from 17 countries. "I lost my swing on the front nine but was able to finish a bit better despite missing a lot of short putts," said Owens, who collected three birdies and three bogeys. "My wedge play was not too good today. If you miss these greens, you're put into some pretty tough positions trying to save par." Florida A&M owns a 595 total after 36 holes, five strokes lower than the University of Texas-Pan American of Edinburg, Texas. Tennessee State University was next with 601, and defending champion Bethune-Cookman College of Daytona Beach, Fla., fourth with 604. Lincoln University cruised to a 615 total, while Kentucky State University of Frankfort, Ky., was a distant second at 655 and St. Augustine's College of Raleigh, N.C., next with 658. Bayer, a junior from Festus, Mo., had a 76 for a 143 total, five strokes better than St. Augustine's sophomore Stephano Stuart of Freeport, Bahamas, who turned in a competitive-best 71 for a 148. Bethune-Cookman's women's team moved to a nine-stroke advantage, over Texas-Pan American, 642 to 651. Senior Maulana Dotch of Dallas, Texas, led the Wildcats with a 75 and 154 total, forcing a tie for individual honors with Pan American sophomore Crystal Frazier of Coolidge, Texas, who had a 75. Argentina's Diego Besga, a sophomore at Johnson & Wales University in Miami, Fla., struggled to a 78 after his opening day 68, but leads the Independent Men's race by eight strokes ahead of John Carroll University freshman Mike Guerrero of Toledo, Ohio, who came in at 79 and 154. The National Minority College Golf Championship is co-sponsored by The PGA of America and the National Minority College Golf Scholarship Fund of Highland Hills, Ohio. -- Second-Round Results --
