FAMU and Hampton win 2002 MEAC All-Sports AwardsMay 21, 2002GREENSBORO, NC - Hampton University women's program has claimed the 2002 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Mary McLeod Bethune Award, while Florida A&M University men's program has received the Talmadge Hill Award. Along with the prestige of having the best overall athletic program in the conference this year, a check for $25,000 will be awarded to each winning institution. Hampton used the spring sports to catapult itself to the top of the list. They were the winners of women's tennis and outdoor track and field, while finishing third in softball to give them a total of 74.5 points for the year. Florida A&M finished a close second with 70 points, they were basically edged out this year by virtue of their 8th placed finish in basketball, while Hampton finished 4th in basketball, a difference of four points. Prior to this year, FAMU had won nine consecutive awards. Rounding out the list; Morgan State finished third with 56 points; Bethune-Cookman and Delaware State tied for fourth with 49.5 points; Norfolk State finished fifth with 49 points; South Carolina State finished sixth with 45.5 points; Howard University finished seventh with 43.5 points; Maryland Eastern Shore finished eighth with 39 points; North Carolina A&T finished ninth with 37.5 points and Coppin State finished tenth with 24 points. On the men's side, Florida A&M separated itself from the field with first place finishes in football and outdoor track, while finishing second in tennis and baseball. The Rattlers finished with a total of 65 points, while Florida-rival Bethune-Cookman finished second with 51 points. Rounding out the field; Hampton finished with 49 points; Norfolk State, last year's winner, finished with 48.5; North Carolina A&T finished with 48 points; South Carolina State finished 40 points; Coppin State finished with 39 points; Howard and Delaware State finished tied with 35 points; Maryland Eastern Shore finished with 26.5 points and Morgan State finished with 19 points.
