All-MEAC Baseball Team AnnouncedMay 9, 2002GREENSBORO, NC - Wesley Timmons of Bethune-Cookman College has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year and headlines the 2002 All-MEAC Baseball Team. Voters were the conference baseball coaches and sports information directors. Timmons, ashortstop, leads the MEAC in quite a few individual categories, including hitting (.448 batting avg.), runs scored (70), doubles (22), total bases (130), hits (82) and on base percentage (.560). He ranks second in slugging percentage (.777), walks (36), sacrifice flies (6), runs batted in (56) and stolen bases (36). He has led the Wildcats to an overall record of 34-17, including huge wins over the Iowa Hawkeyes and defending national champions Miami Hurricanes. During the week of the Wildcats win over Iowa, Simmons was recognized as the national player of the week runner-up for his efforts, which included 14 hits, eight RBIs, four home runs, two doubles, and six stolen bases. Last year's MEAC Player of the Year, Jason Battle of North Carolina A&T State University, was selected to the All-MEAC First Team. Shavon Phillips of Delaware State University was selected as this year's Rookie of the Year. Phillips posted an earned run average of 3.81, while collecting eight wins in 82 innings pitched, with 83 strikeouts.
