Norfolk State's Jones Relieved of Coaching DutiesMarch 6, 2002Norfolk, VA—Norfolk State University has relieved Wil Jones of his coaching duties after three seasons as head coach of the men’s basketball program. He will be reassigned to an undefined position at the university according to NSU Athletics Director Orby Moss.
"At this time, we feel that a change is necessary for our men’s basketball program to be competitive with the level of play in the MEAC,” stated Moss Throughout his tenure Jones compiled a 34-52 overall record and led the Spartans to a MEAC semifinal appearance last season. The 2001-02 team, selected to finish first in the MEAC by Street and Smith Basketball Magazine and second in the conference preseason poll, fell to the Eagles of Coppin State College, 61-46, in the first round of this year’s conference tournament held in Richmond, VA. “We didn't get it done and that is the reality of the coaching profession,” said Wil Jones. “I would like to thank Dr. McDemmond and Mr. Moss for the opportunity to coach at the Division I level and I will be looking for another coaching opportunity." “Jones is a master recruiter and he has brought in students who are good people with good skills and great potential,” said Moss. “Coach Jones and I have been friends and we will remain good friends forever.” The University will immediately form a search committee to find a replacement for Jones. Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply and a short time schedule for the selection of a new coach has been set.
