Morehouse Picks Willard Scissum as Head Football CoachMarch 19, 2002After a six-week search, Willard Scissum has been selected as the 24th football coach at Morehouse College. Coach Scissum assumes the reins of the Maroon Tiger grid program after having served as the co-offensive coordinator at Morris Brown College during the 2001 season
. A native of Huntsville, Alabama, Scissum was a four-year starter as an offensive lineman at the University of Alabama where he was a member of three bowl teams - Cotton, Liberty, and Sun with the Crimson Tide. While at Alabama he played two seasons for the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant. After leaving Alabarna, Scissum pursued a professional football career from 1985 through 1988. He played in the National Football League with the Denver Broncos and the Washington Redskins. He also had experience with the Calgary Stampede and British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League. A Dean's List and Honor Roll student, Coach Scissum received his bachelor's degree in business administration from Alabama A&M University, and earned a Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama. An excellent teacher, Scissum began his coaching career at Alabama A&M in 1991. He served as a student assistant at A&M until 1994. When Coach Scissum returned to the University of Alabama in 1994 to pursue his master's degree, he joined the Crimson Tide coaching staff as a graduate assistant. While serving on the Alabama staff, the team participated in the l997 Outback Bowl. Scissum is no stranger to Morehouse. He was the Maroon Tigers' offensive line coach for three years from 1998 through the 2000 season. His work with the offensive linemen was instrumental in the team's surge to an 8-3 record in 2000. Scissum has strong coaching bloodlines. He is the nephew of Haywood Scissum who won two SIAC championships while head football coach at Tuskegee in the 1970s. Morehouse Athletics Director, Andre' Pattillo is comfortable with Coach Scissum taking over the program. "I am confident that the Maroon Tiger football team will continue to build upon the foundation that Will helped lay while a member of the staff from 1998 to 2000," Pattillo said.
