Savannah State Names Ken Pettiford as New Head Football CoachJune 18, 2002SAVANNAH, GA - Savannah State University has named Ken Pettiford as head football coach. Pettiford, whose appointment is effective immediately, fills the vacancy created by the untimely death of Tiger Coach William R. "Bill" Davis in March of 2002. "Coach Ken Pettiford has demonstrated that he can structure a high-quality football program and we are confident that he will display the leadership and discipline necessary to nurture our students both academically and athletically," SSU President Carlton Brown stated. A former NFL player, Pettiford has served as head football coach and teacher at Maplewood High School in Nashville, Tennessee, since 1998. He was the head football coach at Alabama A&M University from 1994 until 1998, where the team finished with eight wins and three losses during Pettiford's final season. Pettiford launched his 20-year collegiate coaching career at Tennessee State University in 1976 where he was a graduate assistant and assistant coach. Eleven years later, he took his first head football coaching position at Mississippi! Valley State University, a program he led from 1987 until 1990. Pettiford earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education at Tennessee State University, located in Nashville, in 1973. He received his master's degree in education administration at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, in 1983.
