Coppin State's Peters and Harris Named Academic All-AmericansJune 20, 2002BALTIMORE-Coppin State middle distance runners Nickie Peters (St. Vincent, W.I./St. Vincent S.S.) and Beryl Harris (St. Lucia, W.I./Vieux-Fort H.S.) have been selected to the 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-America Men's Track/Cross Country team.
Peters, Coppin's Male Athlete of the Year for the past three years, was named to the second team. He was also a member of the Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars first team and was chosen to the HBCU Scholar Athlete Team earlier in the year. After winning the Eagles' first seven cross country meets this past season, including the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship, Peters was named most outstanding performer at the league's indoor track championships. Peters, a chemistry major with a 3.80 cumulative grade point average, also bettered his own school record in the 1500 and anchored three relay teams to top five finishes in their respective divisions at the Penn Relays. Harris, Coppin's 2002 Male Scholar Athlete, was named to the third team. An Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars track and field first-team honoree, he was a member of the Eagles' distance medley relay team which placed second in the College Division at the 2002 Penn Relays and set a school record last year. Harris is a computer science major with a 3.90 grade point average.Peters and Harris are the fifth and sixth Coppin State athletes to earn Academic All-America honors, joining John Choinski (baseball, 1990), Terquin Mott (men's basketball, 1996), Cecil Christwell (baseball, 1998) and Ian Roberts (men's track/cross country, 1998). The Verizon Academic All-America program, in its 50th year, recognizes collegiate student-athletes for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing field. To be eligible, an athlete must be a key member of the varsity team and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.
