Albany State Baseball Coach Resigns

June 6, 2002

Albany State University Athletics Director John I. Davis has announced the resignation of head baseball coach Stanley Stubbs.

Head coach of the Golden Rams team for two years, Stubbs resigned to pursue other career opportunities in athletic administration, Davis said.

“Coach Stubbs is a great coach and he is really going to be missed,” Davis said. “We can’t really replace him, but we are going to find another quality baseball coach.”

Stubbs led the ASU Golden Rams to two consecutive Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) titles in 2001 and 2002. Prior to joining Albany State, Stubbs coached the Paine College Lions to their 2000 SIAC championship victory. He received SIAC Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2000 and 2001.

“I want to thank all of the people and organizations that have supported me the past two years. I am going to miss my friends, players, Albany State University and the city of Albany,” Stubbs wrote in his letter of resignation. “I am, however, excited about the career opportunities that await me. I wish the University, especially the Athletics program, well.” Davis also announced the appointment of Edward Taylor as interim head coach and Kenyan Conner as interim assistant coach.

Both former Albany State baseball and football athletes, Taylor and Conner will manage the baseball program until a permanent coach can be hired, Davis said.

Taylor is a 2001 ASU graduate and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Health and Physical Education at the University. Taylor served as a graduate assistant during the past baseball season.

An assistant football coach at ASU, Conner received his undergraduate degree in 1997 and the master’s degree in Health and Physical Education in 2001 from Albany State.
