MVSU Opens Academic Resource CenterJanuary 25, 2002ITTA BENA, Miss. -- One of the most notable accomplishments and proudest moments for Mississippi Valley State University Athletics Director Lonza Hardy in his first 10 months of leadership of the MVSU athletics department is the opening of the Student-Athlete Academic Resource Center. "The Student-Athlete Academic Resource Center was born out of our commitment to insure the total well-being of our young men and women both academically and athletically," Hardy said. "It reinforces the primary goal that we all have here at Mississippi Valley State University and that is to do all that we can to help our students excel academically and graduate." Consisting of 10 internet-accessible computers, the Academic Resource Center will assist MVSU student-athletes with class assignments, enable them to surf the world wide web for information and serve as a tutorial center for athletes needing special assistance. Alyse Wells-Kilbert will serve as the center's director and also the Devilettes head volleyball coach. Kilbert came aboard the athletics staff on September 17 2002 and is currently assisting the women's basketball team. The Carthage, MS native comes to MVSU after serving as the head volleyball and basketball coach at Belhaven College in Jackson, MS, where she led her Lady Blazers' basketball team to a 24- 7 record in 2000-01. "I'm very excited about today," Kilbert said. "I think it's important for student-athletes to recognize the student part of being an athlete, to gain the honors and the awards from the academic side as well as the athletic side. The center will provide our athletes with a place in which they'll have tutorial help and also become more knowledgeable about computers. We'll also have an Academic Wall of Honor where we'll spotlight our athletes who are doing well in the classroom and in their sports."
