NCCU's Spence Suffers "Mild Stroke"
Reported in "good" condition
December 7, 2001
(DURHAM, NC) North Carolina Central
University second year men's basketball head coach Phil Spence is in
good condition after suffering a "mild stroke" Thursday morning,
according to Spence's primary physician, Dr. Charles Cook.
Spence, 47, is expected to remain at Rex Hospital in Raleigh for 4 to 6 days,
and will miss the Eagles' next basketball game at Catawba College in Salisbury,
NC on Saturday, Dec. 8.
"Based on his progress, I expect he will be able to return to work
on a limited basis in 14-21 days if no further complications arise,"
said Dr. Cook.
No decision has been made about an interim replacement for Spence at
this time.
"Basketball pales in comparison to our health," said NCCU Director
of Athletics Lin Dawson. "Our No. 1 concern as a department is that Phil
has the support necessary to return to full health. We are concerned
about our Eagle family member. Right now, that is where our heart is."
