Percy "Chico" Caldwell Named Director of Athletics at WSSUAugust 16, 2001WINSTON-SALEM, NC-- Percy L. "Chico" Caldwell, director of planning and development at Iowa Valley Community College District, has been named director of athletics at Winston-Salem State University, effective Aug. 27. In making the appointment, Chancellor Harold L. Martin, Sr., said, "We are pleased to have Dr. Caldwell join our team here at Winston-Salem State. He has more than 20 years of higher education experience as a senior administrator in the areas of athletics, teaching and fundraising, and I believe he will serve the university well in strengthening our athletic programs, our bonds with supporters of athletics and leadership programs for our student-athletes." Caldwell replaces Anne Little, who resigned as WSSU's director of athletics in May. Throughout his career, Caldwell has served as coach, athletic director, dean of instruction, interim dean, instructor and fundraiser. He has experience in interacting with community and business leaders, fund-raising, and student-leadership development, Prior to his current position, Caldwell served as dean of instruction of arts and sciences at Iowa Valley Community College District, athletic director and head basketball coach at West Virginia State College, Charleston, W.Va., head basketball coach at South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, SC, assistant men's basketball coach and physical education instructor at Livingston University, Livingston, AL, and coach and administrator at Miles College, Birmingham, AL. While at West Virginia State College, Caldwell was named the West Virginia Conference Coach of the Year in 1990, and Athletic Director of the Year in 1991. He built program funding from $200,000 in 1987 to $500,000 in 1988 and continued to build funding to more than $1.5 million during his time at WVSC from 1987 to 1991. While at Miles College, Caldwell led the basketball team to four consecutive conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Division III NCAA finals once. He was also named Coach of the Year in 1978 by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In addition, he was the college's Teacher of the Year in 1979 and the college's Most Outstanding Administrator in 1977. Caldwell earned his B.S. in Sociology/Psychology at Miles College. He earned an M.A. degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from the University of Alabama Birmingham, and his Ph.D. from Iowa State University, in Ames, IA.
