Texas Southern hires four new football coaches
August 15, 2001
Texas Southern's football team announces the
hiring of four new coaches for the 2001 season. Offensive line Donovan Miller,
outside linebacker Dearrion Snead, running backs Marcus Dowdell, and student assistant
Lonnie Phillips.
Miller a former All-SWAC offensive tackle at TSU, previously served as the defensive
coordinator at Maranacook High School in Augusta, Maine. He also coached at Cony
High School in Read Field, Maine where he was the offensive coordinator.
Coach Snead enters his first year at TSU assisting the outside linebackers. Before
coming to TSU, Coach Snead was the co-defensive coordinator of Virginia State.
He was also the co-defensive coordinator of Southwest State. Snead coached the
defensive backs at Tiffin University and the outside linebackers at Tennessee
State.
He attended North Carolina A&T and graduated from St. Joseph's College in
1995. While in college, Snead played strong safety and was named to the All-Marine
Team twice. He was also named Newcomer of the Year.
Dowdell played a total of eight years professionally with the New Orleans Saints,
Arizona Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs. He attended Tennessee State University
where he was a 2nd Team All-Ohio Valley Conference wide receiver. While at Tennessee
State, he received the "Toyota Leadership Award".
Phillips enters his first year of coaching as a graduate assistant. Prior to coaching,
Phillips played linebacker for four years at TSU. The Tigers exceeded expectations,
beginning the season 7-0 for the first time in school history. Phillips helped
the team finish with their best record (8-3) since 1952.
