One of first females to coach Division I Men's basketball

BALTIMORE-The Coppin State College men's basketball program has announced that
assistant Stephanie Ready, one of the first females to coach Division I men's
basketball and the first to recruit off-campus, has resigned.
Ready has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach for the Eagles.She
is one of just three women ever to coach Division I men's basketball-Jennifer
Johnston of Oakland and Bernadette Mattox, an assistant at Kentucky from 1990-95
and currently the head women's coach there, are the others.Ready also was head
volleyball coach for three years prior to relinquishing those duties this past
spring.
The 25-year-old native of Takoma Park, Md., was one of the youngest Division I
head volleyball coaches in the country during her tenure.As a student-athlete,
she was a two-sport standout at Coppin State, lettering in basketball and volleyball.On
the hardwood she averaged 6.9 points and 4.1 rebounds over her four-year career
(1993-97) and currently ranks among the all-time top 10 in four categories at
Coppin-steals (2nd), assists (4th), points (8th) and rebounds (10th).
Ready graduated cum laude from Coppin State with a bachelor's degree in
psychology in 1998.She was named head volleyball coach less than two weeks prior
to the start of the 1998 season, during which the Lady Eagles snapped a 129-match
losing streak.
