Shaw Bears Return To Gridiron With 10-Game ScheduleApril 29, 2002Raleigh, NC - The Shaw University Bears will return after 23 years to collegiate football action this fall with a 10 - game schedule. "We are excited about the upcoming schedule, especially with most of the games in Raleigh," stated SU Head Coach Greg Ruffin. SU has not sponsored football since 1979 and the new era of Bears Football will kickoff at home on Saturday, August 31 at 1:30pm against Fork Union Military Academy. All home games will be played at John H. Baker, SR Stadium (Southeast Raleigh High). SU will compete on the club level in 2002 and will move up to NCAA Division II and CIAA competition in 2003. The Bears will also host St. Paul's College (September 21), Hargrave Military Academy (October 5), Bethel College (November 9) and will close out with the Homecoming clash against Allen University (November 16). The Bears will travel to George Mason University, Allen University, Edward Waters College, St. Paul's, and the match -up with cross town rival St. Augustine's College will be hosted by the Falcons this season. "The football staff and I feel as though this schedule will allow us to compete at a very high level in our inaugural season. With five home games our alumni and the community will have a chance to enjoy college football right here in Raleigh," concluded Ruffin.
