Alabama State University releases 2002 Football ScheduleApril 25, 2002The Alabama State University Athletics Department has released the 2002 football schedule where the Hornets will participate in five classics with four of them in the state of Alabama. "I think a 12 game schedule will really help us this season, it is a challenging football schedule for us. We are looking to overcome weaknesses, before, we began conference play," said third year Coach L.C. Cole. For their season opener the Hornets will take on Miles College in the A.G. Gaston Labor Day Classic at Legion Field on Sept. 1, in Birmingham. The Hornets are 19-0-1 against Miles College, the last time these two teams faced each other was in 1978 with the Hornets winning 34-3. First time opponent the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will host the Hornets in the annual River City Classic on Sept. 7 in Chattanooga, Tenn. This will be the Hornets only classics that will not be played in the state of Alabama. The Hornets will host SWAC foe Texas Southern University for their home opener on Sept. 14, at Cramton Bowl. In the 29th Annual Gulf Coast Classic, the Hornets will face off against SWAC foe Jackson State University on Oct. 5, at Ladd-Pebbles Stadium in Mobile. The Hornets were defeated last year by Southern University 32-7 in last years Gulf Coast Classic. The Hornets have posted a mark of 12-16 in the Gulf Coast Classic. The 61st Annual Magic City Classic against arch rival Alabama A&M University will be on Oct. 26, in Birmingham at Legion Field. Last season in the Magic City Classic the Hornets defeated Alabama A&M 35-0. The Hornets are 29-28-3 in the Magic City Classic and 35-28-3 overall against Alabama A&M University. The Hornets will celebrate homecoming on Nov. 28 at Cramton Bowl against arch nemesis Tuskegee University in the 79th Annual Turkey Classic. Last season Tuskegee University defeated the Hornets 31-27 in the 78th Turkey Classic. Last season the Hornets finished with a record of 8-4 and a SWAC East record of 6-1, that garnered them the Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division Title. The Hornets were defeated by Grambling State University 38-31 in the third Annual SWAC Championship Game.
