N.C. Central 45, Edward Waters 0

(Durham, NC -- Sept. 29, 2001) The North Carolina CentralUniversity used every part of their team to score against the EdwardWaters College Tigers en route to a 45-0 victory in Durham, NC.

There was a special teams touchdown (first of the season) whenKevin Bonsu's blocked punt late in the first quarter was picked up byJonathan Sherrill in the end zone for the first score of the game.Next, Chris Gilmore intercepted Al Brunson's pass from 6 yards out, andhe raced into the end zone for a defensive touchdown (first of theseason). Then, the offensive onslaught began for the Eagles.

The NCCU (3-1) offense did not show that they are one of the mostexplosive offenses in the country, but they did manage to show EWC (0-4)just how to put points on the scoreboard.

Eagle quarterback Lamont Alston used touchdown runs of 1 and 4yards to put NCCU up 35-0 after three quarters of play.

At the midpoint of the fourth quarter of play, NCCU's Jamal Moldenkicked a 33-yard field goal in order to complete the Eagles' ability toscore in every facet of the game. After that score, the lead was pushedto 38-0.

After an average day of rushing, Cheo Johnson (85 yards) finallygot into the end zone with just 2:01 remaining in the game. The PATfrom Molden was good, and the score would jump to 45-0.

The big story of this game was defense. The NCCU defense held theTigers to -46 yards of rushing. EWC only managed to gain 72 yards oftotal offense on the contest. Although the Eagles scored 45 points,they were held to just 176 yards of total offense on the day. That iswell below the average for NCCU, which was 368 yards entering the game.

The Eagles were led in tackles by Scheldon Connor and Chris Gilmorewith nine tackles a piece. Connor had four of his nine tackles behindthe line of scrimmage, including a sack. Gilmore chipped in 1-and-a-halfsacks for the Eagles. The Tigers of EWC were led in tackles by SergioJordan with 11 tackles (two for loss).

The Eagles will now prepare to take on the Broncos of FayettevilleState University next Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadiumin Durham.
