Stillman 31, Edward Waters 19

The Stillman College Tiger football team extended its winning streak to three games by defeating the Edward Waters Tigers 31-19 Saturday evening.

Stillman (5-3) thoroughly dominated Edward Waters (1-8) for three quarters, but lost momentum in the fourth through penalties, fumbles and poor special teams coverage.

The Stillman Tiger offense started quickly as running back Riccardo Thomas scored on a one-yard run at the 7:15 mark in the first quarter, giving Stillman a 6-0 lead. The touchdown capped a three play 20-yard drive. Kicker Eric Beech missed the extra-point.

Five minutes later Thomas scored on a six-yard run, capping a five play 74-yard drive. Stillman went for the two-point conversion and quarterback Antwan Blatch connected with Tavares Spillman, increasing the lead to 14-0.

Neither offense could put effective drives together in the second quarter. On its first possession of the second Stillman committed the first of its seven turnovers, as Blatch was picked off by Johnson Session. Edward Waters wasted Session's interception and were forced to punt the ball away.

Stillman took a 14-0 lead into halftime. Stillman opened the third quarter as it did early in the game and began to pad its lead. Back-up running back Zack Berklin capped a four play 71-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run. Beech's extra point gave Stillman a 21-0 lead.

At the 7:30 mark in the third Stillman increase its cushion as Beech made a 43-yard field goal, making the score 24-0. Less than a minute later third string running back scampered 15-yards for Stillman's final score of the game. Beech's extra point made the score 31-0.

Despite the dominance that Stillman displayed through three quarters the Edward Waters Tigers continued to fight hard. With 2:48 remaining in the third running back Terrel Randolph capped a nine play 65-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. Gabriel Moore's kick cut the lead to 31-7.

In the fourth quarter Edward Waters gained the momentum by forcing Stillman turnovers and making good special team plays. With 5:44 remaining in the game Johnson Session returned a Jimmy Leith punt 54-yards for a touchdown, making the score 31-13. Moore missed the extra-point. At the 2:43 mark Paul Jackson recovered a Freddie Johnson fumble 70-yards for the final score of the game.

Although, Stillman had several mishaps in the second half the Tigers held the edge in the major statistical categories. Thomas led all rushers with 149-yards on 14 attempts. Blatch passed for 108-yards on six of 10 passing attempts. Spillman led all receivers with 54-yards on three receptions.

Defensively for Stillman defensive lineman Darryl Johnson led the way with a game high 11 tackles and three sacks. Brenden Givan recorded nine tackles and two sacks.

For Edward Waters Randolph carried most of the load as he carried 15 times for 13 yards. Quarterback Dexter Davis passed for 133-yards on seven of 22 pass attempts and rushed for 15 yards.

Jackson led EWC with 10 tackles.

Stillman will next host the Lincoln University Tigers for its homecoming game. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:30 pm.
