S.C. State 37, Howard 33Washington, DC -- Frank Williams rushed for 91 yards and three touchdowns and the South Carolina State defense came up with several big plays, including a fumble return for a score, to help the Bulldogs to a 37-33 win over Howard Saturday at Greene Stadium.The victory was the second in as many weeks for Coach Willie Jeffries' team, giving S.C. State a 3-5 overall mark and a 2-3 showing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Howard, despite four touchdown passes by Roy Anderson in his first start of the season, dropped its fourth straight contest to dip to 2-7 on the season and 1-5 in league. The Bison's Jevonte Philpot, who was on the receiving end of two of Anderson's scoring passes, set a single season record of 12 touchdown catches for Howard. The Bison finished with 43f4 total yards, including 320 in the air. Reese McCampbell also came up big for the Bulldogs, who had 320 total yards, with 183 coming on the ground. McCampbell, who split the quarterbacking duties with Brett Young, completed seven of 10 attempts for 74 yards and one touchdown, and had 14 rushes for another 59 yards. Williams, who had just 12 carries in amassing his total, scored on runs of 28, 24 and one yards. His first score, which came with 9:15 left in the second quarter, put the Bulldogs ahead 13-0 after Guy DePalo's point after touchdown was blocked. S.C. State, following a scoreless first period, had taken a 7-0 lead on a 30-yard fumble return by defensive end/tight end Ken Jones with 14:10 left in the second. ronically, it was the second fumble return of the game for a score by the Bulldogs. Linebacker Dreak Pooler rIeturned a Howard fumble 71 yards for a score midway the opening quarter, but defensive penalty against S.C. State wiped out the play. The Bulldog defense was opportunistic several times in the contest. Following the quick 13-0 start by SC. State, Howard stormed back to grab a 20-13 lead on three touchdown passes by Anderson. His first of the day, a 27 yarder to Philpot with7:49 left in the half, pulled Howard to within 13-7 following the point after touchdown. After stopping the Bulldogs, Anderson went to work once more as he and Philpot hooked up from44 yards out with 5:05 left on the first period clock. Jason Walker added the PAT for a 14-13 Bison advantage. The Howard lead swelled too 20-13 when Anderson scrambled away from ma Bulldog rush to find Kevin Simmonds for a 31-yard scoring pass with 1:22 left in the period. The point after touchdown try was blocked and SCSU's Marvin Fulton returned it for two points, pulling S.C. State to within 20-15, and that's the way the halkf ended. The Bulldogs regained the lead when Williams got his second score of the day, this one from 24 yard out. The SCSU junior also ran for the two-point conversion. Putting the visitors ahead 23-20 with 13:24 to play in the third. Anderson hit Shaun Miller with a 24 yard scoring pass just under four minutes later and following Walker's kick, Howard was ahead 27-23. The Bulldogs, however, scored the next 14 points to take a 37-27 edge with 3:20 to left in the third. Jones, who had earlier scored on the fumble return, got his second score of the day when he lined up at tight end and caught a 12-yard scoring pass from McCampbell. DePalo's PAT put the Bulldogs ahead 30-27 at 6:09 of the period. Williams followed with his third score of the day, from the one-yard line, to push the SCSU lead to 37-27 after the PAT by DePalo. Howard came back to close the gap to four when Roy Anderson went in from the one with just 1:24 remaining in the game. The PAT was no good, leaving the Bulldogs ahead 37-34. The Bison went for the on-side kick but Kambui Maxwell recovered for SCSU and the Bulldogs ran out the clock.
