N.C. Central 43, Cheyney 8

(Durham, NC--Sept. 8, 2001) The statistics told the story from start to finish in this contest as the Eagles of North Carolina Central University defeated the Wolves of Cheyney (PA) University by a score of 43-8 in O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium in Durham, NC.

NCCU (1-1) used 436 yards of total offense and 384 yards rushing, while Cheyney (0-1) was held to just 130 yards of offense for the game, including only four yards rushing.

On its very first possession of the game, the Eagle offense took the ball 80 yards on 15 plays in a time-consuming 7:12 in order to take an early 7-0 lead over their counterparts from Pennsylvania. A mix of rushes by Vinshawn Jacobs and Cheo Johnson kept the running attack going on the drive, which was capped off by a Jacobs one yard plunge for the go-ahead score.

On the next offensive possession, the Eagles took just three plays and took the ball 38 yards in 1:32, capped off by a Johnson touchdown from eight yards out. The kick by Jamal Molden put the game at 14-0 in favor of the Eagles mid-way through the first period of play.

The NCCU defense was a major factor in this game as well. Linebacker Chris Gilmore finished the day with 10 tackles (five unassisted). Helping out Gilmore was defensive end Scheldon Connor with five tackles, three for a loss of 12 yards, and two sacks.

The Wolves had very little to smile about on the day except a beautiful drive capped off by 15 yard pass from Antowine Graham in the corner of the end zone to John Chestnut. The two-point conversion was good, and the score was then 17-8 in favor of the Eagles.

The NCCU offense was keyed for most of the game by freshman quarterback Sean Williams, who accounted for three touchdowns and 146 yards of total offense. He finished up the day with 52 yards and a touchdown passing, and 94 yards and two touchdowns rushing.

The last time the Eagles ended up with over 436 yards of total offense was on Oct. 9, 1999 when they had 457 yards of total offense. The Eagles last rushed for over 384 yards in a contest on Oct. 2, 1999 when they had 421 yards.

NCCU will now prepare to take on the Trojans of Virginia State University next Saturday at 7:00 pm in Petersburg, VA.
