S.C. State 42, Delware State 21Orangeburg, SC - South Carolina State quarterback Reese McCampbell accounted for four touchdowns, two each passing and rushing, tailback Kambui Maxwell added two scores on the ground and fullback Frankie Williams rushed for a career-high 123 yards to lead South Carolina State to a 42-21 win over Delaware State Saturday before a homecoming crowd of 14,695.The victory was the first home win of the season for the Bulldogs and snapped a five-game losing streak by Coach Willie Jeffries' team. S.C. State also captured its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win to improve to 2-5 and 1-3 in the league. Delaware State, who is coached by former S.C. State assistant Ben Blacknall, fell to 2-5 on the year and 1-3 in the MEAC. Blacknall, the long-time defensive coordinator for the Bulldogs until three years ago, presented the retiring Jeffries with several gifts prior to the kickoff. McCampbell, who was starting his second straight contest, had scoring passes of eight and 31 yards, both to freshman Larry Grant, and added rushing touchdowns of 13 and 25 yards. The Bulldog sophomore completed five of his ten pass attempts for 138 yards and had nine rushes for 54 yards and the two scores. The 42-point outburst by S.C. State was the most points scored by the Bulldogs this season. Jeffries' team has struggled offensively all season, averaging just over 15 points. In its first six games, S.C. State had scored more that one touchdown in a game just twice. S.C. State, which had 537 yards in a 28-17 loss at Hampton last week, rolled up 426 yards, with 259 coming on the ground. The Bulldogs broke away from a 21-all tie midway the third quarter on McCampbell's second rushing score of the day and went on to score the game's final 21 points. The touchdown came from 13 yards out and, following the extra point by Guy DePalo, put S.C. State ahead 28-21 with 5:46 left in the period. The big play on the drive, which covered 94 yards in seven plays, was a 65-yard run by Williams, which came with the Bulldogs backed up at their own six-yard line. Less than three minutes later, the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard again when Maxwell scored his second touchdown of the day from five yards out. DePalo, who was a perfect 6-6 on point after touchdowns, added his fifth of the day for a 35-21 S.C. State edge with 3:04 left in the third. McCampbell scored from 25 yards out with 8:08 left in the game to round out the S.C. State scoring. The Bulldogs scored twice in the first six minutes of the contest to go ahead 14-0 before the Hornets battled back to within one point midway the second period. Maxwell got the first of his two scores from 12 yards out, completing a 3-play, 61 yard drive with 12:16 on the first period clock. Grant caught the first of his two scoring passes from McCampbell at 9:12 of the period for a 14-0 Bulldog cushion. But the visiting Hornets, helped by defensive penalties against the Bulldogs put together back to back scoring drives to close the gap to 14-13 with 13:56 left in the half. Andre Blackston scored from seven yards out for the Hornets' first score, culminating an 80-yard, 16-play drive that was kept alive by a roughing the punter call against S.C. State. The point after was blocked, leaving the Hornets behind 14-6. Maurice Foster's two-yard run with 7:09 left in the half pulled the Hornets to within 14-13 after the extra point by Edward Suarez. The drive was kept alive by a roughing the passer call against S.C. State which nullified a Bulldog interception on the play. The Bulldogs went ahead 21-13 with 2:06 left in the half, when Grant and McCampbell hooked up for their second score from 31 yards out. S.C. State took that lead to the lockerroom but the Hornets pulled even with 11:09 left in the third when quarterback Kitrell Barnes hit Corey Hutchins with a one-yard scoring pass to cap a six-play, 57-yard drive. Barnes connected with Tavaris Walters for the two-point conversion. Jeffries finally had a victory to celebrate to go along with all the awards and gifts he has been receiving in this his final season. In addition to the gifts from Blacknall, who as his assistant for 22 years, Congressman Jim Clyburn presented Jeffries with a commendation permanently inscribing his name into the U.S. Congressional Record, and former SCSU All-American Robert Porcher, now with the Detroit Lions, presented a check for $105,000 to kickoff the Willie Jeffries Endowment Fund.
